Gonorrhea
DESCRIPTION
A sexually transmitted disease also known as the clap; it is considered one of the world's most common infectious diseases. It is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae which is most often transmitted through sexual intercourse, including oral and anal sex. Gonorrhia may be passed on from an infected mother to her newborn baby. Many times, the person may be a silent carrier - i.e., they exhibit no symptoms of the disease but may infect others. If there are symptoms in the female they include frequent and painful urination, cloudy vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, inflammation of the pelvic area, and abnormal uterine bleeding. If the male has a purulent urethral discharge, he should assume he ahs gonorrhea until proven otherwise. If left untreated, it can cause serious complications in the body.

Genital Herpes
DESCRIPTION
The sexually transmitted disease, genital herpes, is common in North America and, unlike syphillis and gonorrhea, genital herpes is incurable. Type I herpes simplex virus causes most infections above the waist, such as cold sores. Type II herpes simplex virus causes most infections below the waist, such as painful genital blisters on the prepuce, glans penis, and penile shaft in males and on the vulva or sometimes high up in the vagina in females. The blisters disappear and reappear in most patients, but the virus itself remains in the body and causes recurrence of symptoms such as fever, enlarged and sometimes tender lymph nodes, and numerous clusters of genital blisters.
For treatment see: Venereal Disease General Treatment.
